We include quotes when writing essay to show that we know the novel. That we can extract the essence, the main points from the text as evidence to support our point of view in the argument.
It allows us to make a statement about themes, characters or setting of the novel. That we can make a comment and analyse to find out the author’s intentions etc.
News Report:
Factual – give reader a good overview to allow them to make up their own mind.
Editorial:
Opinionated – persuade reader of a point of view.
An editorial is an opinion on a certain issue from a person whereas a news report is an overview or a summary of a certain issue.
” No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world.” (Robin Williams)
The quote states that regardless of what other people say, we can make changes to the world by believing strongly in what we are doing. This relates to the novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, in the trial of Tom Robinson and Atticus’ action during the trial. Tom Robinson is ultimately convicted by the all-white jury. In this we see segregation and prejudice. When Atticus is presenting his verdict at the end of the trial, he concluded with, “in the name of God do you duty… In the name of God believe him.” We can see that Atticus believes Tom is innocent and tries hard to set him free, regardless of what other people in Maycomb think about him. After the trial is over, Jem was devastated of the result. Ms Maudie explains to Jem that they have won something important. They have start to make a difference in the issue of racism in Maycomb – “it’s a baby step, but it’s a step.” This is comparable to William’s quote because Atticus believes that all men are created equal and, slowly, more people in society will agree to this idea and hence resolve the racial issue in Maycomb.
In Chapter 22, Ms Maudie explains to Jem that Atticus is one of the people who was, “born to do our unpleasant jobs for us;” however, Jem does not understand what she means. What Ms Maudie is implying is that there are people who are born to have courage to do things, to stand up for things that nobody would and Atticus is one of them. That someone stands up for the right thing and eventually, all the other people would do the same. Ms Maudie also explains that even though Atticus had lost the trial, they have won something important which is making a difference on the racial inequity in Maycomb – “it’s just a baby-step, but it’s a step.”
At the end of the novel, Tom Robinson is found guilty regardless of the evidence presented by Atticus which proves that Tom is innocent. Harper Lee ended the novel in this harsh and sad scenario because she wants to show the complexity of the her idea of a typical racial judgement.
Information I would like to know in the news report about Michelle Corby:
– Who was the criminal.
– The amount of drugs she was carrying.
– The public opinion on this.
– Family’s opinion on this.
– A quote from the criminal.
– How was the drug hidden or where it was hidden.
– What day did it occurred.
– Who else is involved in this ‘drug dealing’.
Dill feels sick about Mr Gilmer’s treatment of Tom Robinson in the trials because it reveals the inequality that Mr Gilmer shows through his cross examination. Dill comes to realise the injustice of racism. He is shocked by the experience of racism for the first time. On the other hand, Scout’s reaction towards this is quite different. She rationalises Gilmer’s treatment of Tom because Tom, “is just a negro”. She shows that she is quite understanding the reality of the life as a black person, that blacks are treated unequally. It also shows that she is ignorant and naive.
It is the third full day of searching in the area where the cockpit of MH17 crash to earth about two weeks ago. Searchers equipped with sniffer dogs, forensic experts and cold trucks are investigating the crash site of MH17 while the Ukrainian army fights the rebels who wanted to create a new country. “[The] searchers [on the Malaysia Airline crash site] are working in the middle of a war zone”, as bombs are landing only 500m from the site.
